Framingham Adult English as a Second Language PLUS (FAESL Plus) was established in
1984 by a group of concerned citizens in the community using private donations. The
program has grown from 30 students to more than 640 students each semester, in the
morning and evening components. The majority of funding is from State and Federal grants.
However, the program is still dependent on community and private donations, as well as fund
raising to maintain services. The FAESL+ program operates in conjunction with the
Framingham Public Schools and Mass Bay Community College, which also provide space and
support for our classes.
Framingham Adult English as a Second Language PLUS has provided free English language
instruction and life skills training to more than 5,000 immigrants in the Framingham area. The
program has helped hundreds of students work towards their GED. We have been a
passageway to a better life for people from over fifty countries and a wide variety of
backgrounds.
Our philosophy is to provide each student with the language skills necessary to achieve
personal success at home, at work, and in the community.
Vision
Framingham Adult English As a Second Language PLUS is a unique program for people who
want to make a successful transition into American society and develop the academic skills
necessary to meet their goals. In addition to English classes, our program offers a wide range
of options and opportunities for every student, including classes in citizenship, computer
technology, family literacy, adult basic education, and GED. Counseling is available whenever
classes are in session.
At FAESL Plus, students and teachers work together to create activities which are realistic,
relevant, and rewarding for all participants. In dynamic learning environments, students strive
toward English fluency, academic achievement, economic empowerment, and civic
involvement. Our common goal is the development of communication and academic skills that
will allow our students to integrate their talents and energy into the life of the community and
the country.
Goals
Each semester brings us three times as many student applications as we can place in our
classes. Our aim is to expand our services to:
Include our waitlisted students
Institute a "Newcomer's Center"
Expand our community education outreach
Continue to develop affiliations with other educational and social service agencies
Obtain permanent space
